Underage Marriage Prevalence in Washington, D.C.:

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 127 minors aged 15 to 17 in Washington, D.C., are currently trapped in child marriages as of 2018, a startling 8 children per thousand. But, because this doesn’t include the thousands of survivors who have escaped child marriage, 127 is actually a significant underestimate of this widespread abuse. The Statutes Which Enable Child Marriage in Washington, D.C:

Washington, D.C., sets 16 as its lowest possible marital age. A minor can be married with the consent of just one parent or guardian—judicial approval is not required, and there is no mechanism to determine if the child actually consents to the marriage. We’re Making Progress to Reform D.C.’s Underage Marriage Laws:

Despite having the highest rate of child marriage in the United States, D.C. hasn’t introduced any legislation to reform their problematic and enablist laws in the last 5 years. Students Against Child Marriage is dedicated to introducing and passing legislation in the nation’s capital—and our organization’s home—to finally outlaw this life-destroying practice.
